Lyman Gauld: very confusing situation. browse over bing and yahoo. it may help!
Johnny Sirko: It really depends on the type of barcode you want to scan and how mobile you want to be. First - there are essentially two types of barcodes - 1d and 2d. 2d barcodes can hold a lot more data than 1d barcodes, but you will need a 2d barcode scanner to read them. 2d barcode scanners are typically a little more expensive than 1d barcode scanners, but not too much more. They also use an area imager (like a digital camera) to take a picture of the barcode and then decode the barcode from that picture. If you want you could also get the image from the scanner back to your PC. It's a grayscale, low quality image, but it can be good for capturing signatures and taking images of damaged items. The most common types of 2d barcodes are Data Matrix, Aztec, QR Code, Maxicode and PDF417. All of those codes can hold roughly 2000 characters of data depending on the make up of the d! ata. Linear barcodes are the types of barcodes you see at a grocery store. Just a series of black bars and white spaces. These are the most common type and can be read with a relatively inexpensive scanner. So as far as the type of barcode scanner to get it depends on the barcodes you're using in your company now.Second - should you get a PDT or PDA type device? If you don't want to bring everything to your desk where you have the barcode scanner you could get a PDA type device with a built in barcode scanner. If you do that you will have to have some type of application running on the PDA that will allow you to get the data from the PDA to your business application. You can't assume that just because you have a PDA you can scan barcodes and they will be automatically input into your application on your server. You need to have some type of application running on the PDA. The application could be a terminal emulation program, a front end to a database on your serve! r or even an Excel spreadsheet that you could download and ext! ract the data from. PDAs are nice because you can connect them to your wireless network and have real time data entry. If you don't have a wireless network you can still use a PDA in batch mode. You just need to go out and scan your data then bring the PDA back to its cradle and transfer the data from the PDA to your system.Another option is a cordless barcode scanner. These have a cradle that connects to your host PC. The cradle serves as the interface to the PC and also the charging base for the barcode scanner. The barcode scanner links to the cradle via bluetooth. There are versions available that can go up to 300' away from the cradle. So if your are that you need to scan in is not large you could go with a cordless system. That way you don't have to write any software like you might have to for a PDA. You could also connect a barcode scanner to a laptop via USB and walk around with the laptop scanning barcodes. There are so many ways to attack this issue an! d I've only just scratched the surface of what you could do. A lot more information is needed about what you want to do, what you have in place and where you want to be in the future to fully answer your question.I've worked tech support for a barcode scanner manufacturer for over 15 years.
